Project Description

Sweeping across 13 000 hectares of savannah and riverine forest, Kapama Game Reserve represents a piece of Africa of the bygone era. Located in the greater Kruger National Park Kapama Game Reserve is owned and managed since the late 80’s by the Roode family.

With the Drakensberg mountains in the distance and iconic Kruger National Park to the east, The Big Five – are at home on Kapama, but so too are over 40 other mammal species and 350 different types of birds. Game drives and bush walks offer fascinating encounters with wildlife, Kapama also offers guests unique African wildlife experiences. Guided personal elephant interactions give guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with elephants and to learn more about their behaviour and natural habitat.

Southern Camp is the newest addition to Kapama Private Game Reserve and was set up with the whole family in mind. There are 15 luxury ensuite Suites and 10 new-built Villas, which includes 3 spacious Family Villas. Each suite and villa are air-conditioned and stylishly decorated in a contemporary fusion of African-safari chic décor.

The Family Villas have their own private plunge pool, otherwise you can spend time relaxing on the expansive wooden deck around a sparkling pool. Guests dine indoors on chilly evenings in the elegant lodge restaurant or under the stars at the rustic outdoor boma. For a romantic treat, you can book a sleep-out in the bushveld.

Itinerary

Day 1    Johannesburg to Kapama Southern Camp

Departing from OR Tambo International Airport board on a domestic flight to Eastgate Airport.

On arrival you will be met by the camp’s team and transferred to Kapama Southern Camp. After a refreshing Welcome drink guests will complete the check in procedure.

Lunch is served between 1 -2 pm

Around 15h00 gather with fellow guests and enjoy a decadent high tea during which you will be introduced to your ranger. After your briefing, Board on the lodge 4 x 4 Open Landcruiser

before setting off on your first afternoon game drive in search for the big 5.  Game drives inside Private Reserves are usually amazing because the area is not overcrowded but also because rangers can go off road whenever necessary to get closer to predator sightings, hence creating good photography opportunities.

While on Game Drive, you will stop for Sundowners at a magnificent location and toast the splendour of Africa as you watch the sun set over the distant peaks of the Drakensberg mountains. As darkness falls, nocturnal animals of the bush get excited as they celebrate “” their dawn “and come out. Your skilled tracker will scan the landscape using a spotlight, which illuminates animals’ eyes. A variety of completely different species can be seen on the night drive back to the lodge.

There is time to freshen up and get ready for dinner. This is the time to discuss the afternoon sightings as well as tomorrow’s plans with your ranger.

Day 2 Kapama Southern Camp

The day begins early with tea or coffee with muffins and fruit before departing on the Game Drive which will take approximately 3-4 hours. The cooler morning temperatures mean that the game in the reserve is often more active, and the softer light makes for great images.

Your guide has an intimate knowledge of the game reserve, which contributes a great deal towards brilliant sightings.

Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast, after which you will have time to relax by the pool and dip into a good book or enjoy the rest of the lodge’s facilities.

Lunch is served between 1-2 pm and it is time for a little siesta.  Around 15h00 gather with fellow guests for a decadent high tea in preparation for your afternoon game drive during which your experienced guide will check your wildlife Wishlist to find out what hasn’t been ticked yet, but you may also be lucky that by your second game drive your wildlife expectations have already been met and even exceeded. Enjoy your afternoon game drive with stop for Sundowner to stretch your legs and witness the African sun set.

Back again at the lodge after an exhilarating afternoon of unforgettable bush life. Get ready for dinner served under open-sided thatch and showcase pan-African dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients.

Day 3 Aurevoir Kapama Southern Camp

One last early wake up call to get you ready for your last safari in the African bush. We have tea or coffee with muffins and fruit before departing on the Game Drive for another 3 to 4 hours.

Back at the lodge and after a leisurely breakfast, it is time to bid farewell to the African bush as your 3 – Day safari bush experience comes to an end. Transfer back to Eastgate Airport to connect with your flight back to Johannesburg.
