Kapama Game Reserve is located in the greater Kruger National Park and is one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned game reserves in Hoedspruit. It is home to the Big 5 and an abundance of other mammals and birds. The majestic northern Drakensberg mountains form the backdrop to the 64-suite River Lodge, which is positioned along a bend of the seasonal Kapama River.
Situated not far from Eastgate airport, Kapama is perfectly positioned to welcome guests flying into the airport, hence offering complementary road transfers to and from its lodges.

Day 1 Johannesburg to Kapama River Lodge
Arrive at OR Tambo International Airport and connect with your flight to Hoedspruit Airport. On arrival you will be met by the lodge’s team and transferred to the Lodge. Enjoy welcome drinks and then afterwards check in.
Lunch is served in The Siyatla Lounge
Around 15h00 gather with fellow guests and enjoy a decadent high tea during which you will be introduced to your ranger. After your briefing, Board on the lodge 4 x 4 Open Landcruiser
before setting off on your first afternoon game drive in search for the big 5. Game drives inside Private Reserves are usually amazing because the area is not overcrowded but also because rangers can go off road whenever necessary to get closer to predator sightings, hence creating good photography opportunities.
While on Game Drive, you will stop for Sundowners at a magnificent location and toast the splendour of Africa as you watch the sun set over the distant peaks of the Drakensberg mountains. As darkness falls, nocturnal animals of the bush get excited as they celebrate “” their dawn “and come out. Your skilled tracker will scan the landscape using a spotlight, which illuminates animals’ eyes. A variety of completely different species can be seen on the night drive back to the lodge.
There is time to freshen up and get ready for dinner. This is the time to discuss the afternoon sightings as well as tomorrow’s plans with your ranger.
Day 2 Kapama River Lodge
The day begins early with tea or coffee with muffins and fruit before departing on the Game Drive which will take approximately 3-4 hours. The cooler morning temperatures mean that the game in the reserve is often more active, and the softer light makes for great images.
Your guide has an intimate knowledge of the park, which contributes a great deal towards brilliant sightings.
Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast, after which you will have time to relax by the pool and dip into a good book or enjoy the rest of the lodge’s facilities.
Lunch is served between 1-2 pm and it is time for a little siesta. Around 15h00 gather with fellow guests for a decadent high tea in preparation for your afternoon game drive during which your experienced guide will check your wildlife Wishlist to find out what hasn’t been ticked yet, but you may also be lucky that by your second game drive your wildlife expectations have already been met and even exceeded. Enjoy your afternoon game drive with stop for Sundowner to stretch your legs and witness the African sun set.
Back again at the lodge after an exhilarating afternoon of unforgettable bush life. Get ready for dinner served under open-sided thatch and showcase pan-African dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients.
Day 3 Kapama River Lodge – Departure
Perhaps this morning instead of joining your morning open vehicle safari you choose to end your safari experience with hot air balloon flight or an elephant back safari (own account). After a final delectable leisurely breakfast, there will be time to purchase some memorabilia from the lodge curio shop before being transferred to Hoedspruit Airport for your flight back to Johannesburg.
